Mines ministry launches portal to track licences

The Mining ministry has adopted an online portal in a fresh campaign to boost transparency in the issuance of licences even as the industry awaits new laws to spur investments.

The transactional Mining Cadastre Portal (OTMCP) launched last week by Deputy President William Ruto will track all mining licences — from exploration to production—that have been issued by the ministry.

“Kenya is now among the few countries in the world to have an online cadastre. We are also the first in Africa to have this modern online mining cadastre that allows new mining applications, “Mr Ruto said on Friday.

The portal has been developed in partnership with the UK’s Department of International Development to boost openness and reduce corruption that has been rife in the mining sector.

Its launch comes just months after the ministry cancelled dozens of mining licences in a row that could have dragged the government into costly legal battles.

Executives of major firms have been citing unpredictability in the handling of licences as the biggest threat to doing business despite its new profile as a hotspot for minerals, oil and gas exploration.

“One of the key aspects of the mining sector reforms is to improve the efficiency of operations. In this regard, the OMTCP is a critical milestone. It provides transparency, accountability and helps avoid disputes,” Mr Ruto said.
